The Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock Review adds Ethernet, 3.5 mm audio and five USB 3.0 ports to a dual display output for $179.99. Using a small to mid size laptop screen is good for working on the go, but as soon as you settle down somewhere, like your own office, you probably would prefer a pair of 24 inch HD screens with a high resolution. Straight out of the box, most laptops can only output to just one monitor in addition to their default displays.
DisplayLink macOS Software. From this page you can download a driver for your DisplayLink® enabled USB graphics device that is incorporated in your dock,.
But fortunately, a video dock with DisplayLink technology will allow you to connect two additional monitors over a single USB port. Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock Overview Although it would work with PCs from any vendor the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock has the traditional ThinkPad look and feel. It has a matte-black, soft-touch sides and a glossy black front surface emblazoned with the ThinkPad logo. It also has the familiar red power light that doubles as the dot above the “I” in the ThinkPad logo.
The product specifications are 1.5 x 5.3 x 3.6 inches and weighs close to 1.7 pounds. The vertically oriented dock can take up about as much desk space as a mouse, leaving plenty of room for your monitors, laptop and other peripherals. Still, it basically has every port that you could need. The only main function that the dock does not provide is power and charging for your laptop, so you’ll need to keep your AC adapter in addition to plugging the dock into your USB port. The back of the dock sports a Gigabit Ethernet port along with 3 USB ports, a power jack, two female DVI connectors and a USB upstream port to connect to your computer.
Although the DVI connector is a DVI-I and the other one is a DVI-D both can take the standard DVI-D cable used by computer computers and graphics cards. The dock then comes with a single DVI-to-VGA adapter that you can use to connect the DVI-I port to a VGA monitor or projector, but it doesn’t offer HDMI connectivity.
The front of the dock has two USB 3.0 ports and a single 3.5mm audio in/out jack for headsets. I would have rather hoped that the dock would provide a separate microphone and speak jack, but a lot of today’s business laptops and basically all of today’s phones only have one single jack. A power button sits on the top of the surface. Installation Setting up the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock takes very little time, around 3-5 minutes. After you plug the dock into the wall and attach the monitors to the DVI ports, we connect the upstream USB cable that came with the dock to a USB 3.0 port on the laptop. The laptop was immediately able to recognize the dock and then started to download USB hub drivers for it specifically.
However, in order to use the dock’s main features we had to go ahead and install the DisplayLink’s software. The dock comes with a CD that includes a copy of all the necessary software, but you can download the latest version from the or websites, especially if you have something like the MacBook Air which does not have an optical drive. Mac OS X and Linux users will also be able to find versions of the software for their platforms on the DisplayLink website. After we installed the software onto our computer, our monitors came on and we were able to navigate through each and open separate windows on each. You effectively are going to get at least two screens when you include the laptop’s native display.
You can choose to not display the laptop screen however. All you have to do is hit Windows + P and then select “Projector Only” straight from the menu. During our test we used the Windows 7 screen resolution menu to rearrange the order of the monitors so the monitor physically on our left had the leftmost desktop. As long as you keep the dock plugged in a DisplayLink icon will appear right on your Windows tray.
When you right click on this icon it will bring up shortcuts to check for updates or launch the screen resolution menu. If you install the software directly from the CD or the Lenovo website, then there is an additional menu for the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock that will allow you to adjust the screen resolution and rotation, along with setting an external monitor as your main monitor. You can also turn off the laptop screen or change the location of your external desktops in relation to your own. If you want to have the full desktop experience, you can plug in a mouse and keyboard into the dock’s USB ports.
You can also connect printers, scanners, and storage devices to your other ports. Performance The ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock will deliver all of the graphics performance that you will need without wearing down the system resources. Lenovo officially has stated that the dock can support resolutions up to 2048 x 1152 on each monitor. We went ahead and tested the ThinkPad T430 laptop with an integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card.
We were able to power two 1920 x 1200 resolution monitors without any lag at all and minimal impact on the CPU resources. In order to further test the performance of this dock, we tried to play a few offline video files at full screen on each of the monitors at the same time.
Each time the videos perfectly returned smooth frame rates of 24 fps, the maximum that those clips would allow. We then played a 2560p video in two different players, one on each screen at a time, and the video was completely smooth at 24 fps. We were also able to play a 4K video spread across the screens or at full screen at the exact same 24 fps. The only problem was when we played the 4K video on one screen and an HD video on another screen, both slowed down significantly and the performance monitor showed how our CPU neared 100% capacity. So the dock was able to handle high frame rate video including the higher 48 fps as well. But the video slows down quite a bit when you try to play 48 fps video on two or more screens. Still, we were able to play 60 fps video at the same time without either of them slowing down.
The dock’s audio output was also perfect. We heard the sound from the video we played crystal clear through a set of 3.5mm headphones. Even when we played two of the videos at once, the sound was still very good without any distortions. The ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock also works great with older computers that have slower processors and the older USB 2.0 ports.
When we connected the dock to the USB 2.0 port on a ThinkPad X301, which has a 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, we were still able to drive both of our monitors without any problem, even playing two HD movie trailers at full screen and at the same exact time. The laptop was a little bit worn out with the higher than HD video, but that’s on the CPU of the laptop, not the ThinkPad dock. Summary So if you’re looking for an easy, fast way to connect your laptop to dual monitors and a number of other peripherals, the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock will deliver all of the ports and performance that you need in a compact, attractive package.
If you don’t like plugging in your AC adapter then you should think about some other models. But if you’d rather go with the most powerful, compact and affordable dual monitor hub on the market, then the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock is just what you need.
